Welcome to My Tea Blog – Let’s Talk About Tea

Welcome to my blog! So, you are new to tea? Let’s start with the basics.

I know you have heard about many different types of teas – green tea, black tea, white tea, herbal tea and more. But do you know what category they belong to? In this post, I will clear all your doubts and give you a simple understanding of the main types of tea.

Let’s start with the types of tea. Do you know all true teas come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis? Except for herbal teas — they are made from herbs and flowers.

But what makes them so different from each other? The answer lies in the processing. We all know our food tastes the way we prepare it. The same goes for tea. Each type gets its flavor and taste from different processing methods. Don’t worry — in my upcoming posts, I will also discuss the processing methods of each tea in detail.

And here’s a little secret — that all the teas on earth can actually be categorized into just two groups? They are either black tea or green tea.I am not saying this randomly, I’ll justify this in my future posts, where I’ll explain the logic behind it in detail.

So do not forget to subscribe my news latter.

Now, let’s jump into the main varieties of tea.

Green tea is one of the most popular types of tea. It is made from tea leaves that are quickly steamed or pan-heated after harvesting to prevent oxidation (the process that turns leaves dark). This is why the leaves stay green and the tea has a fresh, grassy, or slightly sweet taste.

Flavor: Light, fresh, and sometimes a little vegetal.

Health Benefits: Rich in antioxidants, supports weight management, improves focus, and may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Popular Varieties: Matcha, Sencha, yellow tea, oolong tea

Black tea is fully oxidized, which gives it a dark color and bold flavor. It is the most common tea in the world and is often enjoyed with milk and sugar.Black tea also has a higher caffeine content compared to other teas, which makes it a popular choice for mornings or when you need an energy boost.Popular breakfast teas like Assam, Darjeeling, and Earl Grey belong to this category.

Flavor: Strong, malty, brisk, or sometimes fruity depending on the region.
Health Benefits: Boosts energy, supports heart health, may improve gut health, and helps with alertness.
Popular Varieties: Assam tea, Darjeeling tea, Ceylon tea, English Breakfast, pu-earh tea.

Herbal Tea (Tisanes)

Technically, herbal teas are not “true teas” because they don’t come from the Camellia sinensis plant. Instead, they are made from herbs, flowers, spices, or fruits. Herbal teas are naturally caffeine-free, which makes them perfect for bedtime or relaxation.

Flavor: Depends on the ingredients — can be sweet, spicy, floral, or fruity.
Health Benefits: Varies by herb. Chamomile helps with sleep, peppermint aids digestion, and hibiscus supports heart health.
Popular Varieties: Chamomile tea, Peppermint tea, Hibiscus tea, Rooibos tea.

Tea is simple, yet so diverse. Each type has its own taste, health benefits, and story. As a beginner, you can start with green or black tea and slowly try white, oolong, and herbal teas. Over time, you’ll find which one suits your taste best.
